Durability of Single Ply PVC

The durability of a single ply PVC roofing membrane refers to the anticipated period of time until it has to be renewed or replaced (assuming regular maintenance is carried out). This is derived from a combination of artificial age testing and performance in use. Durability is assessed as part of the Accreditation Certification process. Monarplan single ply roofing membranes have a life expectancy in excess of 30 years, demonstrating superior durability and system service life performance. Icopal single ply membranes have been used in all building sectors including commercial, health, education and residential new build and refurbishment.

Monarplan single ply roofing membranes are available for mechanically fastened, fully adhered, ballasted or green roof waterproofing applications.

Monarplan Single Ply Roofing Product Description

A mixture of polymer compounds (PVC-P)extruded to achieve a consistent, homogenous sheet are brought together in two layers to encapsulate either a polyester or glass mesh reinforcement. Both the upper and lower layers of the compound are of the same high quality ensuring that optimum weld strength is consistently achieved. Reinforcement Monarplan exhibits superior mechanical properties due to the unique grid design of the polyester reinforcement. The reinforcement is manufactured completely flat and embedded into the bottom layer before bringing the two PVC layers together, ensuring high performance properties and a completely homogeneous sheet. Polyester reinforced membranes are resistant to tearing under wind load and designed to withstand the pull through of the fixing pressure plate. Polyester membranes are typically used for mechanically fastened applications. Glass reinforced membranes are very dimensionally stable and are typically used for ballasted and green roof applications.

Overlap Security
Monarplan is a thermoplastic single ply roofing membrane. As a result, single ply overlapping sheets can be welded together to form a homogeneous lap using hot air equipment (eg. manual hot air welders or automatic equipment).

To ensure the Monarplan membrane retains a consistent colour appearance, the upper polymer layer is coloured with the same pigment throughout.

Material Compatibility
Monarplan single ply roofing membranes are compatible with the majority of construction materials, and offer excellent resistance to exposed roof top conditions. However, the membrane can be adversely affected by contact with bituminous or coal tar products. In this situation or when used over expanded polystyrene insulation a geotextile separation layer will be required. Alternatively Monarplan GF Fleeceback membrane can be used.

Mechanically Fixed System
Monarplan FM single ply roofing membranes are mechanically attached through to the structural deck using Monarplan Tubular Fasteners of appropriate length. The fasteners are required to penetrate through the structural deck with a minimum projection to the underside of 25mm. The fasteners are positioned within the overlap of adjacent sheets. Fixing centres are determined following completion of a wind uplift calculation, carried out during the initial design stage (refer to Icopal Technical Services for further information). Thermal insulation boards should be independently mechanically fastened to the structural deck. The number of fixings and the application pattern is dependant upon the size and type of insulation board.

Adhered System
When installed as part of a fully adhered system, Monarplan GF Fleeceback membrane (1.5mm + fleece) is applied to the insulation or structural deck using Monarplan Fleeceback Adhesive. Full adhesion is achieved by spreading and thoroughly rolling the adhesive across the whole substrate area, prior to embedment of the fleeceback membrane. Adjoining sheets are fused together by hot air welding ensuring a watertight seal is achieved

Ballasted Inverted Roof
Monarplan G single ply roofing membrane is loose laid with all overlaps hot air welded. Extruded polystyrene insulation boards are laid onto the Monarplan membrane and covered with a filter protection fleece and stone ballast or paving slabs.

Ballasted Warm Roof
Monarplan G membrane is loose laid over Thermazone PIR insulation boards with all overlaps sealed by hot air welding. The membrane is surfaced with a with a filter protection fleece and stone ballast or paving slabs
